2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Review – In Toyota compact, the Corolla will chase the Auris in March 2019. It’s particularity? Be content with a 100% hybrid offer, including a new state-of-the-art version announced at 180 hp of cumulative power. Several months before its production, Argus was able to take the wheel of a pre-production copy.
At the time, engineers are already well advanced on the fourth generation hybrid platform, the famous TNGA marketed since on the Prius IV (2016) and the compact SUV C-HR (2017). With a single mechanical hybrid-petrol 1.8 of 122 hp cumulated, Toyota was however cut some customers, used to run in 2.0 diesel or 1.6 petrol turbo 150 hp minimum. The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid 2.0 180 hp was virtually born.
The most powerful hybrid Corolla multiplies the differences compared to the basic version. The 1.8 l 98 hp petrol engine is replaced by a 2.0 l 153 hp, always atmospheric but focused on fuel economy (bi-injection, high compression ratio, “long stroke” cylinders, electric water pump). The first electric motor, it goes from 53 to 80 kW. Lack of space under the hood, the 12V battery migrates from the engine compartment to the floor of the trunk, which closes the passage 48 l volume sedan (but only 7 l break).
As for the battery, with lithium-ion technology on the Corolla 1.8, it “becomes again” here nickel-metal-hydride, announced as powerful but 16 kg heavier. For reasons of supply, Toyota indeed reserves the battery pack for the most efficient version (the 1.8 points at 77 g), and the other version 2.0, at the same time less obsessed with the cost to use (86 g) and more able to erase this slight overweight.
2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Price
Launched in March 2019 sedan and June 2019 in Touring Sports wagon, the Toyota Corolla will offer its two engines at the outset. If the version 1.8 associates itself with the four levels of available equipment, the Corolla 2.0 is reserved for the two superiors and is displayed, with equal finishing, 2 000 € more. Its starting price starts at € 30,950 and is not reduced by any bonus.
The standard equipment is however generous from the first Active level with, among others, air conditioning and automatic lights, adaptive cruise control (active until the stop), reading of the panels and active assistance in maintaining the track. But as detailed on the next page, integrated GPS navigation only arrives at the collection level, while the new controlled suspension is systematically optional.
2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Test Drive
Enveloping seats, driving position lowered by 24 mm, true shifter replacing the tiny joystick: the environment of the driver becomes clearly more dynamic but, in good hybrid, the Corolla is tasted first at a gentle pace. From a slight pressure on the accelerator, it takes off in 100% electric mode up to 20 km / h then the engine takes over, without the slightest jerk.
With an educated right foot, the relay can even intervene a little later, and switch back on batteries at a steady speed, up to 70 km / h. A delicious wisdom that embellishes the journeys in the city, and softens consumption: little more than 4.5 l / 100 km recorded in the morning traffic jams . provided that the engine is hot. Otherwise, even when stopped, 2.0 wakes up to power the battery and/or heating, at a high speed (about 1500 rpm) that breaks the initial quietude.
But the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid 2.0 was especially expected at the turn on the road, generally less suited to Toyota hybrids: when a need for power, their epicyclic gearbox (equivalent to a continuous drive, in terms of feeling) is racing the heat engine, breaking the hearing comfort and the feeling of responsiveness of the pedal.
In Corolla 2.0, the system still climbs beyond 3,500 rpm at the slightest request (coast, progressive insertion on a fast track) but, at least, the Japanese accompanies this rise of an effective, immediate, even frank if the driver crashes the accelerator pedal. The raises become comparable to those of a powerful turbo-diesel and allow to release the accelerator faster, to the benefit of the noise level and consumption.
This unprecedented health accompanies a chassis that is both more pleasant in turns (more precise steering, eye-catching front suspension, discreet anti-slip ESP) and more comfortable than the Auris, despite the slight vibrations at low speeds due to the 18-inch wheels. our test Corolla. A quality to be confirmed without the new optional piloted suspension, which adds two driving modes (Comfort and Sport +) to the existing Eco, Normal and Sports positions.
Other tests to be carried out during the test of the final model in February 2019: the disappearance of the slight buzz felt around 1,600 rpm, and the – less likely – a reduction of aerodynamic noise (on the highway) and of rolling (on bad roads). To be continued.
2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Touring Sports Interior
The Corolla exudes a good perceived quality, especially in this high finish Collection (upholstery mid-leather, red stitching on the dashboard, the doors and the console). But the “open” storage space is a bit lacking. The Corolla exudes a good perceived quality, especially in this high finish Collection (upholstery mid-leather, red stitching on the dashboard, the doors and the console). But the “open” storage space is a bit lacking. The central part of the counters becomes digital and customizable with the Techno Pack (1000 € on Collection). Located lower than in the Auris, the front seats combine good comfort and effective cornering. The longer wheelbase of the station wagon (+ 6 cm) improves legroom, but the upholstery remains firm. The Corolla sedan is only 313 l of volume in version 2.0 (361 l on 1.8). At 581 l (598 l ins 1.8), the break is much better and ensures modularity issue. Handles are used to hold the files from the entrance, and the flat floor covers a large space for luggage or a spare wheel.
If the 122h Hyolla Corolla can compare to the Prius (122 hp also) or the Hyundai Ioniq (141 hp), our 180h test version remains the only one in the world, at this level of power in the hybrid. The alternatives are therefore to be found on the side of foreign heat compacts, the Renault having nothing in store: more petrol proposal between 130 and 263 hp on the Peugeot 308, EDC box for the time unavailable on the Renault Megane TCe 160.
At € 30,950 in starting price, the Toyota Corolla starts a little lower than a Volkswagen Golf (from € 32,740 in 1.5 TSI 150 Evo DSG, and € 32,560 in 2.0 TDI 150 DSG), but beyond the other rivals: Seat Leon (32 175 € in 2.0 TDI 150 DSG, 29 910 € in TSI 150 DSG), Ford Focus (29 550 € in 2.0 EcoBlue 150 BVA8, 27 350 € 1.5 EcoBoost 150 BVA8) or Opel Astra (29 800 € in 1.6 Diesel BiTurbo 150 hp BVM, 26,200 € in 1.4 Turbo 150 hp BVA).
In its new version 2.0 180 hp, the future Corolla has qualities unknown to other Toyota hybrid models: effective road and highway revival, nice chassis in sinuosities, presentation and driving position blooming good dynamism. Its transmission (continuous dimming) still prevents it from shining in sporty driving but conversely, the dynamic 2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid 2.0 has lost none of its softness and sobriety in the city, where another compact of this power show a consumption much better.
What their customer steal, despite a tariff become beefy and some perfectible points (low-speed vibrations, general soundproofing) that could improve on the model of the series by March 2019. We will not miss the check, during the official tests of the Corolla scheduled in February.
