With its engine raised to 184 hp, the 2020 Mazda MX-5 2.0 almost plays the big arms without denying anything of its lightweight roadster philosophy, agile and fun to drive. But the price starts to weigh.
The Mazda MX-5 has never raced after pure performance, preferring to focus on the driving pleasure of a lightweight little roadster. Moreover, the first model of this iconic roadster, released in 1989, had only 115 hp … Generation 4 arrived in 2015, called ND, is in line with the original philosophy: the car has been shortened, lightened and lowered to regaining the agility of the beginnings. With that joyful liveliness, the MX-5 now adds performance with 2.0 SkyActiv-G’s increased power from 160 to 184 hp, making this version the most powerful of the MX-5 series. The steering wheel wins the adjustment in depth and the inclination of seats has been optimized. No change in aesthetics, but who will complain. Note however a new color Black Metallic for alloy wheels.
2020 Mazda MX-5 Price & Equipment
Other innovations of the MX-5 2020 are the driving aids (driver alert, emergency brake assist, reading panels and rearview camera) in the € 1,000 Innovation Pack. That’s good, but it’s not really what you expect on an MX-5, so save as much as € 1,000 because the price of this version 2.0 184 hp, available only in High Selection finish, n ‘ is not present: 31 700 € (+ 300 € compared to the version 160 ch), to which must be added the chopper of the malus (3,290 €).
Our test car is flirting with the 35,000 € and goes beyond it with the Sports Pack at 1,800 € which includes the Bilstein suspension, the strut bar, and the Recaro seats. The price of this version is away from the roadster accessible from the beginning, but fortunately, it remains in the catalog the sparkling 1.5 engine of 132 hp at a tight price: from € 25,900 and penalty limited to € 1,373. Note that the 1.5 gains a little torque with the passage to the 2019 vintage and that evolutions also concern the declination RF roof retractable hard.
2020 Mazda MX-5 Performance
To go from 160 to 184 hp, the 2.0 SkyActiv-G engine has revised its intake duct, its valves, its injection pressure, its airflow and its friction. The gain of 24 hp is accompanied by a maximum speed that goes to 7,500 rpm instead of 6,800 rpm. The engine torque is slightly improved: 205 Nm (+ 5 Nm) at a lower speed (4,000 rpm instead of 4,600). Enough numbers, let’s get behind the wheel as Mazda has promised a neater sound.
Find the hoop of the MX-5 is to return to the original values of the little roadster: we live with the car, its vibrations, its jolts and especially its agility. At 80 km / h, we already take pleasure, as long as the road draws laces. This was the case during our test on the famous e, this high-altitude road that winds in the Carpathians, Romania side. If the work on the sound does not jump to the ears – it lacks a bit of low-speed humming – the 2020 Mazda MX-5 is not stingy performance side. Atmospheric 2.0expresses itself fully thanks to the featherweight of the car and he climbs with joy in the high revs with a stamp rather angry. The MX-5 2.0 takes advantage of its new features to offer more nervous picks and sportier sensations. Moreover, its 0 to 100 km / h (6.5 s against 7.3 for the 160 version) now equals that of a GTI of 200 hp as the new Ford Fiesta ST.
Beyond the performance, it is the propulsion chassis of the MX-5 that remains the centerpiece. No evolutions on this side and the Japanese girl remains balanced, agile and predictable. Above all, she does not reluctant to sway when provoked and she does not finish her slide by a resumption of grip too brutal. A real pleasure, amplified by the shifter at ultra-short travel and the direction quite lively. Note that the dynamism of our MX-5 is helped by the auto Blo quant (in series with the 2.0) but also the Sports Pack. The latter includes the Bilstein suspension which allows a rigorous maintenance of cash at a high rate, without being uncomfortable. The most athletic will make this choice. For those who prefer winding the wind rather than rolling the knife between the teeth, the version with normal suspension will be more appropriate because more tolerant for passengers. Everyone will be delighted by the frugality of the engine, which can be satisfied with 7 l / 100 km in normal driving.
2020 Mazda MX-5 Interior Features
The MX-5 ND type has given way to modernity with the screen at the top of the dashboard. No evolution of the presentation on the 2019 vintage model. The steering wheel now adjusts to a depth of 3 cm to better adjust the driving position. Recaro seats offer good support. They are included in the Sports Pack at € 1,800. The Bose Audio system in series on Selection includes speakers in the headrests. The 2020 model receives driving aids and reversing camera in the Innovation Pack.
Competition on this niche of small cabriolets is very low. In this 184 hp version, the Mazda MX-5 can only cross the line with the Abarth 124 Spider and the Cooper S Mini Cabriolet. The Italian, who shares his underwear with the Japanese, is more expensive (36 510 € with penalty), less powerful (170 hp) and his driving less versatile because more virile. The English are a little less expensive in access prices (32 813 € with penalty), but it feeds on many options and is more comfortable in the role of the starlet rather than in that of offering the great thrill to his driver.
2020 Mazda MX-5 Verdict
The New MX-5 the tone and shows that its excellent chassis easily cash a surplus of energy. Communicative and delightful, the MX-5 184 hp betrays the DNA of this iconic roadster only on one point: the price, more really popular. But it now offers a better-differentiated positioning compared to the access version 1.5 of 132 hp, less expensive, already fun but much lighter in performance.
