2020 Lamborghini Urus Plug-in Hybrid Test

2020 Lamborghini Urus Plug-in Hybrid Test

So goes the world: even the manufacturers of the most exclusive supercars put themselves in the SUV. The 2020 Lamborghini Urus ticks all the boxes of the modern technological luxury but fortunately preserves this grain of madness that one expects of a Lamborghini

Overview

The recipe seems to fly every time. All the luxury or prestige manufacturers who have embarked on the design of an SUV have seen their sales explode. The first to have tried the experience is, of course, Porsche with the Cayenne from 2002, followed long after in 2016 by the Maserati Levante, the Bentley Bentayga or recently the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. For Lamborghini, the launch of its Urus is already a success: despite a doubling of its production capacity, the manufacturer already has more than a year of delivery time for this model marketed since the beginning of the year. Purists can scream sacrilegiously, no builder can resist such a temptation, not even Ferrari who will in turn launch into the arena. And Lamborghini can mischievously point out that he is the only one to count on his heritage as a true precursor: the LM002 produced between 1986 and 1993. But this is another story that we will come back to in detail in the near future.

It’s no secret that Lamborghini belongs to the Volkswagen Group and can, therefore, draw heavily from its organ bank. The 2020 Lamborghini Urus SUVis therefore based on the same platform as the Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne and Bentley Bentayga. It shares with the Cayenne Turbo the same engine base, namely a supercharged V8 4.0. However, the manufacturer of supercars had the obligation to do better than his classmates, so it has its most powerful version: 650 hp, 100 hp more than the Cayenne Turbo, excuse the little.

In fact, the 2020 Lamborghini Urus could claim the status of the most powerful SUV on the planet if theJeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk did not taunt him with his 707 hp. The Italian can also play in the courtyard of limousines with its 5.11 m long. A reality that his plastic skilfully conceals. Its angular lines inspired by the Aventador and its flying flag unmistakably give it a sporty appearance, amplified by the huge rims of 21 inches minimum. Fans can even opt for 23-inch models. Despite its Germanic genes, the 2020 Lamborghini Urus has not lost the sense of spectacle and excessiveness that characterizes a Lamborghini.

To speak Price when one evokes such a mark would appear a vulgar nothing. For customers who wish to be on board a Urus, paying the high price is almost part of the game. They will not be disappointed since the base price is set at $235.305. However, this is almost a deal against the Bentley Bentayga which starts at $248.214 or Rolls-Royce Cullinan which happily passes the $297.399 mark. In the highest billing contest, however, the future owner of 2020 Lamborghini Urus retains his chances if he draws from the generous catalog of options. The choice of decorative inserts is vast, as well as that of driving aids which offer including night vision (2.883 USD) or semi-autonomous driving with the head-up display at $6863.

It was known since the Cayenne that it was possible to achieve a truly sporty SUV but the Urus is a pleasure to push the bar even higher. Behind the wheel, its monumental size and mass of 2,200 kg never seem to want to be felt. Of course, the driver perched high does not confuse the Urus with an Aventador. But the level of performance it offers is enough to move the most jaded. The 0 to 100 km / h shot in 3.6 s and the inexhaustible reserve of power inspire all superlatives. The impression that dominates however is the extreme ease of driving. Those who remember the restive character of a Countach or the too light front of a Miura find no trace behind the wheel of this machine with the ultimate in chassis technologies: air suspension, four-wheel steering and active antiroll. The set is controlled by an “Anima” driving mode selector that offers no less than six different programs activated by a spectacular aircraft-inspired controller. Unlike many other systems, this one really transfigures his personality. In Strada mode, it turns out to be an SUV perfectly civil, comfortable and silent, at ease in the daily tasks and almost disappointing for those who expect noise and fury. The transmission is then forgotten, as are suspensions whose filtering quality is surprising given the size of the wheels. The same goes for carbon / ceramic braking in series. Our copy had probably been subject to the thorough running that requires this type of disc, but it is clear to see its effectiveness and especially its remarkable progressiveness to the pedal.

When you activate the Sport mode on Lambo urus, which lowers the suspension, changes the response of the transmission and the sound of the engine, the atmosphere becomes much more manly. But it is of course in Corsa mode that the Urus turns into a furious animal. The V8 then starts to crackle wildly, the gearshifts become brutal and the stability program is reduced to a minimum. More consistent, the direction is surprisingly direct and precise in these conditions. Of course, it was not possible for us to exploit all its capabilities on open road, which is snow. But we had never felt such sensations aboard an SUV. There are, however, limits to the prowess that the 2020 Lamborghini Urus is able to achieve. It seems difficult to go below 14 l per 100 km, even at a steady pace on the motorway. It is also on this ground that it reveals one of its rare design flaws: persistent air noises in the mirrors.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Interior & Space

Unsurprisingly, the 2020 Lamborghini Urus reveals in its cockpit its kinship with Audi and Porsche. There are many commands and the dual touchscreen well known. Nevertheless, the design of the dashboard is that of a Lamborghini with the sense of spectacle specific to the brand. The firing of the machine is done through a button protected by a small removable red hood as in a fighter. The aerial inspiration is found on the two handles of the driving mode selector, while the design of aerators adopts the angular aspect dear to the brand whose acronym is ostentatiously displayed in front of the passenger.

The leather is naturally ubiquitous and some details are inspired by leather goods and crafts: this is the case of the ski hatch, which opens thanks to a small tongue and a lug, in the manner of a dress belt. If the 2020 Lamborghini Urus adopts the essentials of German luxury, the atmosphere on board is much warmer, and a few small finishing details a little approximate paradoxically reassure the exclusive character of the model. A mixture more successful than it seems and surprisingly reminiscent of the region where our trial was held, in the upper Adige: there is spoken there as naturally as German as Italian.

Our test model was equipped with the option four individual places charged $7.549 and offer the rear two fully electric seats separated by a wide armrest. Despite this limousine equipment, it is not at the back that the 2020 Lamborghini Urus reserves the best of itself. Its roof guard is indeed limited for a large adult, especially when equipped with the panoramic roof, and available legroom, although sufficient, is not exceptional for a vehicle of 5.11. m long. If its threshold appears high, the safe offers a substantial volume of 616 l. Be that as it may, it is by far the most practical and practical Lamborghini in history, even though Espada was already clearly distinguishable from the Italian supercars.

Is Lamborghini Urus SUVsWort to Buy?

While luxury SUVs abound, 2020 Lamborghini Urus has very few direct competitors. Admittedly, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk already cited competes in terms of power, but it is far from offering the same level of technology, while its selling price of 137261 USD places it obviously in the lower category. Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan play luxury more than sportsmanship. The closest competitor of Urus currently available is the Cayenne Turbo, charged from $162133. Porsche has the good taste to wait a little longer to launch its S version, which should partly make up the difference in power of 100 hp between the two vehicles. But the biggest threat to the Urus will undoubtedly come from Aston Martin, which is about to launch its DBX, and of course Ferrari, which has clearly announced its intention to produce an SUV, even if no information transpires for the moment about it.

If for a brand such as Lamborghini, the decision to produce an SUV is more opportunism than passion, the 2020 Lamborghini Urus certainly asserts a personality and even a charisma of his own. We remain stunned by the level of performance and versatility it offers. This is probably the latter that explains its success: it may for the first time to ride daily and family Lamborghini. A promise that may seem difficult to resist, even if the Italian supercars specialist fatally loses some of its exclusivity.
