2020 DS3 Crossback Review: Design, Interior, Features & Price
DS continues to roll out its range with the 2020 DS3 Crossback, a small SUV that hunt on the grounds of the Audi Q2 and Volkswagen T-Roc. We had the opportunity to board a few days before his revelation at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.
After a long career started in 2010, the DS3 is in the final stretch (his career will stop in autumn 2019). For his descendant, the manufacturer has changed his tune. Finished the format of small urban three-door (3.95 m), its offspring takes the shape of an urban SUV, called DS3 Crossback. A logical choice gave the global craze for this type of vehicle. Nevertheless, out of the question to cut customers from the current DS3 (its bestseller), which explains the very compact size.
Thus, with a length of 4.12 m, the DS3 Crossback is much shorter than its main competitors: Audi Q2 (4.19 m), Volkswagen T-Roc (4.23 m) or Mini Countryman (4.30 m) m). This is felt once on board, but we will come back to it later. Let’s linger for now on his style and the new CMP platform that will also be used by the new Peugeot 208 in 2019.
The DS3 Crossback is distinguished by short overhangs, a small glass surface, and very curved rear fenders. Enhanced sportiness on the most powerful versions with 18-inch wheels (225 mm tires) and a rear bumper revealing two impressive exhaust outlets. ” We did not compromise on style, ” says Thierry Métroz.
For the rest, we find the DNA of the big brother DS7 Crossback: DS Wing’s grille, vertical light signature, LED taillights joined by a chrome insert. And a few nods to the old DS3 through the shark fin on the flanks and the floating pavilion offered in three different shades.
The DS3 Crossback also brings its share of innovations, unpublished in the segment. Starting with its flush door handles automatically deploying when approaching the vehicle (as on a Range Rover Velar ). Or its window lashers hide behind the sheet improving the aesthetics of the vehicle.
2020 DS3 Crossback Interior
Inside, we find the spirit of the DS7 Crossback with the ” Toggle Switches ” control buttons surrounding the shifter and inserts “Clou de Paris”. There are also some original features such as the front of the center console inspired by the DS frame and the side vents located in the doors to ” give a better impression of width, ” says Thierry Métroz.
DS has also played the card of modernity with the presence of a touchscreen (7 to 10.3 inches), a fully digital instrumentation (in series), a head-up display (missing the DS7 Crossback ), massaging seats or even a 12 HP Hi-Fi Focal system. But what most geeks of you will prefer is the ability to open and start the vehicle with his smartphone (DS Smart Access).
Entering the 2020 DS3 Crossback, we discover a pleasant interior to look at and the neat presentation. The ergonomics are well studied with all controls grouped under the central vents. In height, the touch screen of the multimedia system is ideally placed and responsive. The menus and graphics are identical to those of the DS7 Crossback. Question quality, difficult to judge objectively because the vehicles are not definitive versions. Nevertheless, the dashboard and the top of the door panels are covered with a coating sheathed surface and, well seen, the chest is fully lined with a feeling.
In short, we feel good in the DS3 Crossback. With regard to the short gauge, the habitability is correct since two adults live without having the knees in the chin and the roof guard is good. They will also appreciate the thickness of the seat and the good inclination of the backrest. The problem comes more from the impression of confinement, caused by the low glass area at the rear and the imposing front seats. In the same way, the competition takes advantage of their lengthened template. This is confirmed by opening the tailgate since the load volume is 352 l (equivalent to a Volkswagen Polo) against 245 l for the current DS3 and against 405 l for an Audi Q2.
2020 DS3 Crossback Engine Specs
The DS3 Crossback has a new version of 155 hp of the 3-cylinder petrol 1.2 PureTech, coupled with the automatic gearbox EAT8. This block is also available in 100 and 130 hp versions. In addition, two 1.5 BlueHDi types of diesel of 100 and 130 hp are available. Unlike its rivals, the 2020 DS3 Crossback does not offer all-wheel drive, but it can have the Grip Control system to improve traction on the difficult ground (snow, dirt, mud) especially that the last scion DS is not a carpet razor (27.5 cm ground clearance!).
The end of 2019 will see the arrival of the DS3 Crossback E-Tense, 100% electric version of the small SUV DS. With a slightly different style in the front grille and rear bumper, this version is equipped with a 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor powered by a 50 kWh lithium-ion battery. DS promises autonomy over 300 km according to the new WLTP cycle (450 km in the NEDC cycle).
