But the Volkswagen group would not be itself without its legendary options catalogs. The Polo GTI can receive in addition the steered damping, surprisingly cheap to €315 (cheaper than the induction refill, make your choice!), the sunroof or even the voice command. On the other hand the lovers of leather upholstery will be for their expenses: it is simply not proposed.
The GTI Polo does not lack opponents in the market, even if the segment is in full upheaval due to the renewal of many models. So the sports reference that is the Ford Fiesta ST will soon be replaced by a three-cylinder version. we can mention in addition to the Peugeot 208 GTi and Renault Clio R.S. already mentioned the DS3 Performance. Much more radical thanks to its mechanical self-locking, it proves to be much more playful than the Polo and really in relation to what is expected of a small sport. At 27 950 €, it is also less expensive, even if it does not benefit from the same technological refinements.
It should also be noted that the Volkswagen group has cleaned its own brands: the Old Skoda Fabia RS and Seat Ibiza Cupra will not be replaced. On the Japanese side, the Polo will find on its way the amazing Toyota Yaris GRMN with a 212 HP 1.8 compressor engine. Remains that the Japanese is a series limited to 1 000 copies, already all sold.
Do not make you longer languish and let’s say it all clear: no the new Volkswagen Polo GTi 2019 does not overturn the hierarchy of small sports. Not because of his engine. Very close to the block of the Audi A4 Ultra TFSI 190, it is characterized by its high compression ratio and its small turbo selected to limit the response time. This is shown on the square torque curve, which allows it to have 320 Nm from 1 500 laps. Enough to offer maximum availability and even the need to panic the front train despite the action of the XDS electronic locking.
If the punch is at the rendezvous, it is not possible to say the same character: the 4-cylinders offers only one flavor, without proposing any modulation. If you have the misfortune to activate the Sport mode, the sound transmitted in the speakers is artificial. Fortunately, the mode selector makes it possible to concoct a menu a la carte: direction and suspension firmer while maintaining the normal sound, sufficiently evocative.
The most disappointing however on board the Polo GTI is the chassis. We had the opportunity to try the car on circuit and the least we can say is that the account is not there. Not only does the DSG6 box lacks speed and sometimes reacts in spite of common sense, even in manual mode, but the front train is rather lazy at the curve input. More serious, the direction is singularly lacking in feeling, so that one is never too sure of its placement.
Finally, the rear train remains riveted to the runway, refusing any mobility except to provoke it violently. It’s finally on a fast but sunken road that the 2019 Volkswagen Polo GTi is the most appreciated. Comfortable, quiet and even quite sober (we raised 7.3 litres at 100 km on a road route) she is comfortable on the highway where she takes advantage of her excellent occasions.

We will have understood, those who seek a very sharpened sportsman will not find their happiness with the Polo GTI. Not incisive enough, it appears closer to a GT than a GTI. There are still real qualities of comfort and a state of the art equipment that will appeal to the lovers of versatility, especially since the car retains all the qualities of habitability and finishing that we know.
Faced with such a compromise, one cannot help but think that Volkswagen wanted to leave a little field for the future Polo R that Volkswagen is currently testing on the Nürburgring. We would expect no less from the quadruple World Rally Champion!
