2019 Kia Stinger, The Korean rival of the Audi A5 Sportback expands its range and accommodates a 4-cylinder petrol 255 HP. Discover the price and the technical sheet of the new Stinger 2.0 Turbo.
Recently rewarded by our jury of the Argus 2018 trophies, the 2019 Kia Stinger offered up to then a short range, with two engines only: 2.2 Diesel 200 hp available from 44 400 €, or V6 3.3 bi-turbo petrol culminating at 370 HP, 59 900 €… and 10 500 € of malus. A big gap today filled by the arrival of a new gas block.
The lucky one is a 2.0 turbo of 255 hp with four cylinders, inevitably associated with an automatic eight-speed gearbox and rear-wheel drive. For recall, the full transmission is available as an option on the Stinger diesel, and comes standard on the Stinger V6 gasoline.

Not available in 2019 Kia Stinger GT Line base finish, the Kia Stinger starts directly at the GT line Premium level. Best known for its well-equipped models, Kia wants to change its status. and directly attacks Audi and BMW, with a large five-door coupe and rear-wheel drive. Realistic? Answer in this test of Stinger, diesel 200 hp and eight-speed automatic transmission.
His target? Ideally the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4 series Gran Coupe, more reasonably the Volkswagen Arten, only another five-door coupe from a generalist brand.
Unlike the artery opposite the Passat, the 2019 Kia Stinger has nothing in common with the Optima, the current family of the Kia range. Its platform, its petrol engines and its automatic gearbox come from the Hyundai galaxy and are also used for the G70 of Genesis, a division of luxury not distributed in Europe.
The Stinger, however, takes advantage of dedicated chassis adjustments, and a European-cut diesel engine (2.2 IDRC 200 ch) In addition to the 370 HP 3.3 Biturbo V6 coupled with the full transmission. 2019 Kia Stinger Interior
Yes: The new Stinger features foamed materials on its dashboard cap, underlined with stitching. Its assemblies never allow for important “days” to appear. Its storage remains more numerous than the rivals, with a large space under the armrest, several pockets with lid and a glove box worthy of the name.
Only here: Unlike the Stinger, the rivals now embark on meters with 100% digital display, screens larger than 8 inches diagonally, and avoid resuming orders already seen on the compacts of the range.
But, let’s not throw the stone at the Stinger: this obsession with interior finishing mainly concerns the European public… which will represent between 7 and 10% of the buyers of the stinger.
With a wheelbase stretched on 2.91 m, the 2019 Kia Stinger does not lack space in the rear seats. As often, the compliment is limited to the side squares (the central square remains firm, bulging, and hampered by the tunnel of transmission to the floor), which also benefit from a long seating and an inclined backrest, very pleasant on long journeys.
It remains to contend with several faults inherent in the very elusive flag line: the obligation to tilt the head well to board, guard to the roof just for passengers exceeding the 1m85, and rear visibility altered by the bezel, narrow and whose Steep inclination slightly distorts the landscape.
The safe is the last victim, with a capacity limited to 406 L in five places… the volume of a good compact. The access is however served by a large tailgate, motorized from the first level of finishing and open “hands-free” from the second. A little consolation!
New Kia Stinger Engine
For the time being, the “family” five-door coupes are rather represented in premium brands. Much shorter (4.64 m versus 4.83 m for the Stinger), the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is no less habitable in the rear and in the trunk (480 l against 406 L at Kia) but is much more expensive: 55 500 € en 420d 190hp BVA8 Luxury , against 44 400 € for the Stinger 2.2 IDRC 200 BVA8 GT Line.
Same remarks for the initiator of this singular segment, the Audi A5 Sportback renewed last year: 4.73 m, 480 L of Trunk, and 58 440 € in version 2.0 TDI 190 S Tronic Avus. Among the generalist brands, only the recent Volkswagen Arten can be quoted as a direct rival: 4.86 m, a nice bunker of 563 L and more space at the rear.
But the price it, always appears very higher: 49 730 € for the Arten 2.0 TDI 190 S-Tronic Elegance, which offers in addition the digital meters and the cameras 360 ° compared to the Stinger GT Line, but leaves optional electric and heating seats, the Full leather upholstery, sunroof, head-high display… or the famous seven-year warranty!
For use, the pretty Korean, however, has a higher consumption, raised to 8.5 l/100km on a mixed course and which does not serve CO2 emissions: 1 050 € of malus for individuals, and 147 g per km which will hardly interest the fleet market (the Audi has 5 peaks at 112 g), yet customers in this segment at more than 70%…
Kia Stinger Review; Conclusion
The Stinger? An improved engine amenity and a short chest, but a line that diverts the looks, beautiful dynamic qualities, royal equipment and the assurance not to ride in Mr. Toulemonde’s family. It remains to be said whether this will suffice to divert the public from the “traditional” brands…
Here, even Kia is not deluded and admits to having no commercial objective: we may sell 500, or 50 a year. For the time being, the goal is not to make the volume but the image “admits the director general. On this last point, at least the attaching 2019 Kia Stinger was successful.
