According to Citroën and the dress clearly chastened, the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus leaves the segment of urban crossovers to join the compact sedan. The facts follow the speech: Enriched endowment, reinforced soundproofing. and extra comfort thanks to new seats and shock absorbers.
The first C4 Cactus was born the rear train between two chairs. Neither really low-cost, nor really premium, nor really SUV, nor really sedan, she has too blurred the tracks with a more amused audience by her original Airbump than actually ready to sign her order form.
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Redesign and Changes
Let’s quickly move on to the stylistic evolutions that have thrown the famous Airbump, the black headband on the tailgate, the big pads on the shields, but also the roof bars to “sedans” This old SUV (the world Upside down!). The evolution that interests us for this first essay concerns the comfort, promised exceptional thanks to two new types of equipment.
First, new shock absorbers with hydraulic stops (both in relaxation and in compression), which are supposed to gradually retain the oscillations at the end of the stroke and allow the calibration to be softened around the midpoint.
Then, seats labeled “Advanced Comfort”, which receive an extra layer of high-density foam to avoid the avertissement of the Assizes (on long journeys, but also on the life of the vehicle).
20 patients were filed by Citroën, following the design of the new progressive hydraulic thrust absorbers.
The “Advanced Comfort” seats, recognizable to this padded upholstery, cost between €350 (fabric) and 1 250 € (leather).
Alas, we note that these famous seats are to be check in addition to the three finishes available and that the new shock absorbers with hydraulic stops will not equip the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus first price, molten by the PureTech 82 petrol.
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Price and Equipment
At first glance, the prices of the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus seem to have increased significantly: between 1 100 € and 2 300 € inflation according to the versions, and a call price up 1 750 € (i.e. 16 950 € for the PureTech 82 Live). An overcast promptly justified by a series of net increases.
The Live level thus wins the air conditioning, the Bluetooth kit, the seat 60/40 and the retro mirrors, the level Feel receives the alloy rims, the recoil radar and the lights, windshield wipers and Clim ‘ automatic, and the shine level adopts the backup camera, the Front parking radar, hands-free key, Mirror Screen and Safety Pack (see Price/equipment/options details on page 2).
The Motorization palette also develops upward, with the programmed shutdown of the PureTech 82 in the summer of 2018, the arrival of a BlueHDi 120 (Euro 6c) to Automatic box in the fall, and the availability of the PureTech 130 from the launch (the range had previously peaked at 100 hp in Diesel and 110 bhp in gasoline). This is besides this PureTech 130, connected to the six-speed mechanical box, which animated our C4 test Cactus.
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus PureTech 130 Test Drive
If the softness of the optional seats does not jump to the… buttocks, it’s all the reverse for the new suspension, impressive at low speed. Supermarket parking “sharp” speed bumps, non-regulatory donkey backs, poorly ungauged sidewalks, the worst obstacles always get in the wheel arches but no longer generate any shaking in the passenger vertebrae.
This “flying carpet” effect becomes more caricatural at higher speed when the deformations of the road generate oscillations reminiscent of the old Citroëns and the beginnings of the hydropneumatic suspension. But that the passengers prone to nausea are reassuring: the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus is supple, never “marshmallow”.
The general comfort also benefits from other developments such as the appreciable improvement of the soundproofing on the motorway (less noises of air and rolling thanks to the new joints, the thickened glazing and the caulked floor), the arrival of a steering wheel Adjustable in depth (on a short amplitude, but the driving position still benefits), and the correction of some oversights of the previous model (impulse window controls, rear ceiling lamp…).
However, there are some congenital defects: No courtesy mirror on the passenger sun visor, no blinds for the optional glazed roof, and rear windows with the compass rather than descending.
What about the new engine in all this? With 130 hp to move less than 1 120 kg driver included, it offers the C4 cactus an exhilarating performance, worthy of a small GTI of the 90 years: vigorous accelerations on the first reports, effective reminders whatever the speed Committed.
This nice tone may seem superfluous for a car first trimmed for a calmed driving (which is true, given the laziness of the car in turn and the effects of torque in the direction to acceleration, at rhythm removed), but a respectable power Also serves the comfort of driving: no need to grasp the inserts on fast track or to downgrade during a need of vigor.
To those who think that an automatic box would manage even better this last point, we tell them that they are absolutely right… and invite them to consult our test of the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus equipped with the PureTech 110 and box EAT6!
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Interior & features
The two-color atmosphere is charged €350 optional with the Advanced Comfort seats. In spite of rigid materials, the dashboard remains pleasant to look at. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility imposes GPS navigation (series on Shine, €990 on Feel) which becomes superfluous once the smartphone is connected. The ventilation is always controlled via the 7-inch touch screen. Only forgetting: A “physical” air recycling button, for quick access. The seat is welcoming for two and enjoys, like the front seats, high density foams optional at €350. 348 L of Chest is little in the compact segment. But the C4 cactus is short: 4.17 m, against 4.30 m for a Megane. The rear windows at Compas can put off some customers. The €600 glazed roof does not open or obscure, but filters the UV well.
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Alternative
Difficult to find a direct competitor to the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus, born crossover and claiming today the the status of simple compact sedan.
In this framework and despite rising tariffs, the C4 cactus is less expensive than its rivals French: 23 450 € for this version high PureTech 130 shine, against 26 500 € minimum for a PEUGEOT 308 equipped with the same block and 26 100 € for a Renault Megane TCe 130 to Equivalent endowment (intense finish with GPS, hands-free key, Alloy wheels 17 ‘ ‘).
This quality is dulled in the face of Korean crossovers, of template and chest volume finally closer to the C4 Cactus 2019 : a Hyundai Kona 1.0 T-GDi 120 Edition #1 tip at 22 900 € (with head-high display, DAB radio and induction charger in addition), and a Kia Stonic Premium with the same engine at 22 490 € (with blind spot monitoring, leather upholstery and seats and heating wheel in addition). But their comfort is much less fluffy.
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Review; Verdict
Now responsible for the interim between the current C4 (stopped in the spring of 2018) and the future (not marketed before 2021!), 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus presents a risky but coherent evolution. More comfortable, quieter, better equipped and possibly more powerful, it now holds the comparison with a compact sedan, and remains a proposal if not staggered, at least original. A bit ‘ undulating ‘ on bad roads, the new suspension does wonders at low speed, and we are slow to gauge its effectiveness on future Citroën models with different settings, C5 Aircross in mind.
