In front of the SUV, these two great breaks persist in defending a certain idea of the journey. Powerful diesel, numerous driving aids and large chests, the Renault Talisman Estate dCi 160 and the new Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer 2.0 170 hp oppose for the title of King of Highways.
Not simple in 2017 to assume the status of the road on the European market. They are in full force of the SUV offensive, including in the territory that was hitherto their guarded hunt, sales to companies. This is why the manufacturers are no longer waiting for them to be marketed: The Renault Talisman Estate was presented in July 2015, a month after the sedan, just like the Insignia Sports Tourer, which landed in concession these days. If the great Vauxhall plays the role of Challenger of the Talisman in our country, it goes quite differently in the rest of Europe: its first generation has elapsed to 900 000 copies, of which 400 000 Sports tourer! It is therefore in real reference that it settles, putting forward a reduced mass of nearly 200 kg and equipment that flirt with the so-called “premium” models.
Unlike the Crossland x and Grandland x, the new Vauxhall owes nothing to the PSA group. It is based on the EXX2 platform of the GM group and the size of the break are quite … American, with nearly 5 meters long! Less imposing, the French knows a contrasting fate: it has difficulty to impose itself out of our borders, but undoubtedly took the lead of its segment in us, where it dominates the Peugeot 508 largely, thanks in particular to its technological equipment Perfectly to the page.
A substantial price difference
The German assumes its difference. It’s diesel 2.0 engine is more displaced than the 1.6 Biturbo Renault, which logically gives it the advantage in terms of power and torque, superior respectively of 10 hp and 20 Nm. It also uses an unpublished Aisin 8-speed transmission. The Renault is confident for its part in a double clutch EDC6. We chose the most exclusive model of the two ranges. Pending the arrival of a new Exclusive finish, this is the Elite on the Insignia, charged 40 500 €, while the Talisman is declined in “initial Paris” version at 43 600 €. A little more luxurious, the French mainly receives the famous four wheel system 4Control. This positioning explains the price difference of the catalog which amounts to 3 100 € in favor of the German. In practice, this discrepancy is not as great as it seems, the fault of the ecological Malus: we will return to it.

Our two breaks take advantage of very advanced rolling trains. In series, the Talisman receives the four steering wheels already mentioned, but also the adjustable suspension driven by the different modes of the Multi sense system. Our Vauxhall was equipped with the “Flex-Ride” chassis which offers three modes, Normal, Sport and tower. Despite the armada of sensors embedded in our two models, none offer a quality of depreciation exactly as far as what is expected in the segment. Of course, the Talisman is more agile, more precise and more efficient thanks to its rear steering wheels, which always impress so much in the big curves. But the 19-inch wheels cause small filtering flaws, annoying on such a limousine.

The Vauxhall has largely improved its balance sheet compared to the previous model: it never gives this sensation of heaviness to the inscription in the corner that characterized it. However, none of the three settings of his suspension is really satisfactory. In tower mode, it adopts a somewhat swaying attitude of American, pleasant in rhythm cast on the straight line, but quickly exceeded when the road is more bumpy and sinuous. In contrast, Sports mode, which offers a better cash hold, instantly causes important trepidations. Finally, the direction, much more natural than before, keeps a certain blur at the midpoint. The chassis of the Renault dominates, therefore, but can still be the subject of improvements.
The Vauxhall engine is sharp but noisy
If the Vauxhall is to mark the step in the matter of rolling trains, its engine defends its German motorway status by hand. Strong of its superior couple and especially its two additional transmission reports, it never fails to go and offers exactly the extension that one expects on a road break.
The French are nervous at start-up and at low speed, but it quickly falters, giving a strange sensation of lack of stretch on the highway. A difference in behavior is explained by its slightly less favorable torque curve: The 380 nm are available on a very small range, while the 400 nm of the Vauxhall are issued between 1 750 and 2 500 rpm. Too bad however that the 2.0 also shows Bruya nt. In this matter, the Talisman is much better and takes advantage of a very appreciable silence of operation over long distances, including acceleration.
Despite its 12 centimeters in length, the Vauxhall does not race in the lead with regard to the volume of loading. With
560 liters, it concedes 12 to the Renault, which offers a lower loading threshold. The difference is equivalent to maximum loading configuration: The Vauxhall announces 1 665 liters against 1 680 for its competitor. However, she catches up with a more practical arrangement of her chest: the folded-down seat of the Talisman is more inclined and presents a step, which is not the case of the Vauxhall whose floor is practically flat. The latter is, therefore, more gifted for large loads.
Neither of them offers the possibility of storing the luggage compartment under the floor. The Talisman gets away with an average solution thanks to fastenings at the foot of the backrest, but one is surprised at such a deficiency when we know that most of the compact breaks offer it. The latter also show up mostly more loveable: a Peugeot 308 SW has as well 100 liters of more trunk volume than the Vauxhall!
A more welcoming Vauxhall in the back
Both breaks are calibrated to accommodate two or even three adults. However, the most talented in the exercise is the Vauxhall, whose bench proves to be better designed. His records are well wedded to the body while those of the Talisman prove to be both more straight and above all more bulging, which is detrimental to comfort. The two competitors are generous in habitability, including in the area of the elbows and the head. On the other hand, the place of the middle appears uncomfortable in both cases. However, Volvo demonstrated with the V90 that it was still possible to make a real 5-seater break.
In terms of finishing our two competitors do not make the same aesthetic choices. The initial endowment Paris appears, in fact, more glitzy: the gray gradient of the upholstery, the ambient lighting with vivid colors and the inserts of white materials contrast with the more purified atmosphere of the Vauxhall. The latter also benefits from a clearer ergonomics. If it’s multimedia system is not the most intuitive of the market, it has no difficulty in dominating the R-Link2 of the Renault: point does not need to epilog on the lack of clarity of its menus. And the German to use a more judicious dosage of buttons that allows taking advantage of many functions without going through the central screen. Finally, the Vauxhall is distinguished by assemblies and a higher quality of materials
When considering the addition, it must be noted that the Insignia leaves with a cannonball on the foot: its ecological malus of 1 353 €, which eats much of its tariff advantage compared to the Renault. According to Vauxhall, these CO2 emissions of 150 g/km, higher than those of the previous generation, are explained by its “conservative” homologation policy which seeks to obtain the closest possible scores of reality. In other words, the Insignia is no longer “optimized” according to the NEDC cycle, which will soon be retired. If this attitude is not lacking in panache, it must be recognized that the break is severely penalized, including for companies, which must pay annually 1 280 € of TVS more than for the Renault.
The Talisman with the coup de grâce by arguing a very favorable price/equipment ratio. It offers in series the high head display, the adaptive Speed controller, the 19-inch rims. Finally, despite the explanations of Vauxhall, we noticed a clear difference in consumption in favor of the Renault, which is us from a consumption of 5.6 liters to 100 km on a road course, against 6 liters for the Vauxhall. It should be added, however, that it offers a catalog of options a little more provided, including the vision 360 ° or the semi digital instrumentation unavailable on the Talisman.
Our choice: Renault Talisman Estate
This opposition is thus the result of a French victory, very much linked to the national context: the ecological bonus-Malus system promotes the Talisman whose less brilliant engine remains sufficient on our motorways. There is no doubt that on the other side of the Rhine, where taxation is different and the free speed on certain sections, the balance sheet would be quite different.
Less agile and a little less well dampened, the Vauxhall shines with its simpler ergonomics and its cockpit better designed. As is often the case, the Renault does not win the bet thanks to the superiority of its performances, but by its high-level price/equipment ratio.
In both cases, one regrets a limited amount of clutter/habitability: These two very imposing breaks offer less volume of the chest than the models of the lower category. To meditate, if your first criterion is the volume of loading.
