2018 Toyota Yaris GRMN Reviews, Prices, Engine Performance, Interior
The 2018 Toyota Yaris GRMN presents itself as the nightmare of the Peugeot 208 GTI and Clio RS: It would be the most efficient of the sports Citadines! The Argus had the chance to test a copy at the end of the development, six months
At a low pace on a deserted road of the Eifel, I reset the second speed and crush the accelerator to the floor. The 1.8 compressor 212 CH (minimum) catapults then the little Yaris GRMN, as “sucked” towards the red zone in an invasive sound, It changes from the indolent Yaris hybrid!
But if this attaching hoarse timbre makes the Peugeot 208 GTI and Clio RS for big shy, the Yaris GRMN will have to educate its exhaust line by its commercialization early 2018: “Noise must be attenuated by 5 or 6 decibels to pass the certification standards” specifies one of the pointers. “However, we will try to keep the same range.” Hopefully
When Toyota tries to craft
Welcome to Germany, a few steps from the Nürburgring North Loop in the “Toyota Garage”. A space of about 300 m² which reminds of a nearby workshop. Here, the small passionate team of the Gazoo Racing’m the development of the first Toyota to wear this coat of arms in Europe (GRMN for Gazoo Racing masters of Nürburgring).
The development of the 2018 Toyota Yaris GRMN is obviously carried out on our usual tracks. This base allows us to validate the settings in real conditions, on the demanding roads around and above all, the North loop of the Nürburgring ». Few of our guests have not trod this mythical circuit, which will welcome us for the first part of the trials of the Yaris GRMN.
The Yaris GRMN at the Nürburgring
Departure. Behind a “opener” Toyota Gt86, we start the 20.8 km of the world’s most demanding circuit with a prototype not yet marketed. Not very reassuring, especially since a thunderstorm has showered the runway whose bitumen, dented, worn and saturated with gum, presents in places a adhesion close to the ice!
Releasing the ABS at the slightest braking, motor loss or even “straight” brutes to the acceleration do not show anything of the capabilities of the Yaris GRMN (see video). Our open road test will eventually be more informative.
2018 Toyota Yaris GRMN on the road
This is no longer the North loop, but our test run has nothing to do with a health walk: partially wet bitumen, bumps, fittings, bends that close. So many traps overflew by the Yaris GRMN, which confirms being born in the corner.
If it’s front gear appears to be running out of reactivity at the time of the robbery, it clearly tightens the trajectory to acceleration with its self-locking differential at the “tough” setting. On this point, the Yaris GRMN recalls the 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport and DS3 performance with the same equipment, as efficient, but less serene on bumpy roads.
“More comfortable, the Yaris GRMN is also more efficient than the DS3 performance and 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport on bumpy Road”
In spite of 30 mm shortened springs, the Sachs GRMN shock absorbers swallow the large distortions without batting an eyebrow, and just end up typing their stops when braking on a succession of bumps.
In addition, a higher setting is planned by marketing, such as a slightly strengthened steering aid to better understand the grip of the front train on a wet road.
2018 Toyota Yaris GRMN Redesign and Changes
Naturally, the Yaris GRMN will not be transfigured within a few weeks, and retain some congenital defects. As a not ideal driving position, deprived of an adjustable steering wheel in depth; A rather long shifter, as it touched the reinforcements of the bucket seats when it tried to be shortened; Or some high speed raises, due to two last few long reports that are not enough to limit the thirst of the compressed 1.8.
On our test course (certainly carried out “beating the drum”), the onboard computer curled the 15 L at 100 km, while the Yaris GRMN hardly contained its CO2 emissions, far superior to the rivals and near-Eliminators in France: 170 g, an ecological penalty set at 4 673 €.
2018 Toyota Yaris GRMN Price and competition
In France, the Yaris GRMN will be marketed at 30 700 € with a complete equipment (GPS, hands-free key, 17-inch forged aluminum rims, etc). With the Malus, the real price rises to 35 370 €, well beyond the 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport (29 750 €, no malus), DS3 performance (27 950 €, no malus) and Clio Rs Trophy (29 600 € + €210 of Malus).
This is the price to pay for this future collector, limited to 400 copies only for Europe. On July 27, 2017, Toyota will open the orders via the Internet and, as for the concert of a popular artist, it is better to go early: first come, first served! A deposit of 1 000 € will then be claimed, pending the actual order (less than 3 months later) then delivery, scheduled for January 2018.
2018 Toyota Yaris GRMN Review
The final version of the Yaris GRMN is announcing itself as a small, engaging GTI, to be driven as to tell: sparkling and sound engine, front-edge gear with acceleration, excellent braking, efficient damping. And the original genesis of a self developed by a reduced team, in record time, with elements chiped right to left (block used at Lotus, reinforced box of Toyota sedan series). That forgives the rare flaws, and the price with Malus, which should not handicap a model to the production so limited. A future collector!
- The tying engine
- The very marked self-locking effect
- Bumpy Road efficiency
- Effective braking
- The low-sport driving position
- The price, handicapped by a very high malus
- The sound of the definitive model?
