2018 Hyundai Kona Comprehensive Review

Panic in the Renault captures, Peugeot 2008 and Citroen C3 Aircross, attacked from all sides. At 4.17 m long, the new Kona sails near the Renault capture (4.14 m), Peugeot 2008 (4.16 m) and Nissan Juke (4.14 m), more compact than the Honda HR-V or Opel Mocha X is located on the edge of the upper segment (4.28 m). The Kona remains logically close to his cousin Kia Stonic (4.14 m), but built on another platform, borrowed from the Rio.

The Kona is a bit longer on the wheelbase (+ 2 cm) and usually gets a certain floor, modified to accommodate a gear shaft. Beyond the ramparts of the city, the Kona continues its good performance. Its firm suspension contains the cash movements, its front gear is inertial in turns, and its direction finally gets rid of the artificial reminder of the other Hyundai models.

An excessively dynamic drive will simply show a lack of motorized output (which does not bode well on slippery ground), and a greedy engine when it is applied for (almost 9 L/100 km of rhythm removed). But the Kona is not a sports car … It shines against it on long journeys, by better containing its air noises, on the motorway, than its rivals Renault capture or Peugeot 2008.

Interior and Trunk

Classic in the front squares, the Kona appears equally conservative in the rear seats. The sliding seat (available in Renault capture and Citroen C3 Aircross) has thus remained on the workbench, such as the folding right front seat or the panoramic roof, yet pleasant for second-row passengers.

Hyundai admits that its facilities mainly appeal to the European market … non-priority for the Kona exclusively made in Korea. Pity that the comfort lacks a little, at this place … The firmness of the seat does not compensate for the suspension, while the central passenger remains the “punished” of the wagon: Unpadded backrest, close distance between the lower belt fasteners, the transmission tunnel annoying to the floor. For fans of carpooling, prefer the side seats!

Although classic and moulded in rigid materials, the dashboard remains pleasant on a daily basis: clear and well arranged controls, compact but numerous storages. And a close collaboration with smartphones: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility from the first level, induction charger from the second, two 12v jacks in console foot.

The generous endowment finally participates in the accreditation, in particular in finishing Edition 1 which embarks on the practical hands-free key, the 8-inch touchscreen instead of 7 (integrating GPS navigation and digital radio to Krell loudspeakers), and the comfortable Head-high display grouping the speed or indications of the GPS.

The first criterion of choice of the Kona will therefore rest on its design but, unlike the Nissan Juke, there is not its only argument: pleasant to drive, quite welcoming, very well equipped and guaranteed five years, the Kona is far from betting on its physique!
