2018 Hyundai Kona Comprehensive Review
Panic in the Renault captures, Peugeot 2008 and Citroen C3 Aircross, attacked from all sides. According to the Kia Stonic, here is the other Korean urban SUV: The Hyundai Kona, with very different design. but not only! The trial version of the first price Kona gasoline, mu of the 1.0 T-GDI 120 ch three-cylinder.
The French language is decidedly little for the contemporary automobile: after the Audi e-tron or AICON, Hyundai launches its Kona. An urban SUV that will create word games more or less dubious, and is mostly the atypical of the band.
Two-story front optics, trapezoidal lattice, thick surrounds of wings and lights embedded in the rear shield form an original set and the opinion that follows: we love or hate!
The success of the Nissan Juke and Toyota C-HR proves, however, that the difference in this segment can be seduced, simply untenable: in 2017 alone, Citroën C3 Aircross, Kia Stonic, seat Arona and Volkswagen T-Roc in the ranks of the city crossovers.
2018 Hyundai Kona Dimensions
At 4.17 m long, the new Kona sails near the Renault capture (4.14 m), Peugeot 2008 (4.16 m) and Nissan Juke (4.14 m), more compact than the Honda HR-V or Opel Mocha X is located on the edge of the upper segment (4.28 m). The Kona remains logically close to his cousin Kia Stonic (4.14 m), but built on another platform, borrowed from the Rio.
The Kona is a bit longer on the wheelbase (+ 2 cm) and usually gets a certain floor, modified to accommodate a gear shaft. The Kona so uncoated four-wheel drive versions, rarely in this segment and only proposed by the Fiat 500, Jeep Renegade, Mazda CX-3 or even Nissan Juke in atypical gasoline version of 190 hp.
Already in concessions, the Kona presents a motor offer for the least simple: two gasoline blocks form its range of 2017. The first is a three-cylinder, 3 120 hp Turbo, binding in connection with a six-speed gearbox and a 4 x 4 gearbox. More atypical, the second is a 1.6 turbo 177 HP, full-transmission and dual-clutch robotic box and seven gears.
In June 2018 will be the diesel offer, with a new block 1.6 IDRC “Euro 6. C” in 110 hp (mechanical box and 4 x 2) or 136 PS (robot box and 4WD). The final version comes out in July, with the Kona 100% electric promised to 500 km of autonomy in the NEDC cycle. Available on the Ioniq sedan, hybrid and hybrid refillable versions will not come to the Kona.
Equipment and Prices Hyundai Kona
In the urban SUV segment, the average selling price is €23 500 in France. Hyundai, therefore, does not need to market aggressive pricing versions (a Citroen C3 Aircross starts at 15 950 €), but no one buys!
The Kona, it starts directly at 21 400 €, in an intuitive version already very well equipped: 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android compatibility car, Clim ‘, automatic lighting and windshield wiper, radar and camera recoil, rims 17 ‘ ‘ and active help in Stay in the way.
For only 1 500 euros more, the Kona Edition 1 (“Theoretical” launch version, because not limited in time or in the number of copies) Adds the GPS, the speakerphone, the smartphone charger by induction and the display head-up. The high executive, therefore, ends with wealth (see Devices cascade on page 5), and also our test Kona dressed. Let’s go!
Spectacular on the outside, the Kona is largely behind the wheel. Here, no huge hold-up handle to the passenger like a Renegade Jeep, nor a motorcycle tank stuck between the Nissan Juke-way seats.
The driving position of the Kona ape rather than a sedan, the dashboard does not have any eccentricity, and the navigation system will not country the owners of Hyundai or Kia recent.
A good point for ease of handling, also served by well thought-out ergonomics and the beautiful amplitude of adjustments of the seat and steering wheel. Pressing the Start button, the three gas cylinders wakes up and the Kona is about to deliver its first dynamic performance
Moving a small three-cylinder into an SUV has nothing breaker, especially when it frees from their usual faults: the Kona 1.0 T-GDi does not generate any vibration at idle speed, enjoys a relatively discreet Stop & Start system, and gum Perfectly smooth, low-speed, in an accordion circulation.
With a better turning diameter, a less dry suspension on the sewer plates and the lower windscreen sizes (station at the dead angles near the roundabouts!), the Kona would, therefore, become the ideal city-dweller: compact, flat hood and visible, thick body protections and standard reversing camera.
Beyond the ramparts of the city, the Kona continues its good performance. Its firm suspension contains the cash movements, its front gear is inertial in turns, and its direction finally gets rid of the artificial reminder of the other Hyundai models.
An excessively dynamic drive will simply show a lack of motorized output (which does not bode well on slippery ground), and a greedy engine when it is applied for (almost 9 L/100 km of rhythm removed). But the Kona is not a sports car … It shines against it on long journeys, by better containing its air noises, on the motorway, than its rivals Renault capture or Peugeot 2008.
Interior and Trunk
Classic in the front squares, the Kona appears equally conservative in the rear seats. The sliding seat (available in Renault capture and Citroen C3 Aircross) has thus remained on the workbench, such as the folding right front seat or the panoramic roof, yet pleasant for second-row passengers.
Hyundai admits that its facilities mainly appeal to the European market … non-priority for the Kona exclusively made in Korea. The fans of Hyundai compact and modular must therefore orient themselves to the urban minivan ix20, still marketed despite the arrival of the Kona: at Renault and Citroën, the capture chased the Modus and C3 Aircross, the C3 Picasso.
Despite these small shortcomings, the Kona releases an honest chest volume (361 l, compared to 350 L for a Peugeot 2008) and a flat loading space, folded seats. The rear space is sufficient for adults (place with very correct legs) and remains suitable for the installation of the children in their seats (The doors open at 90 °).
Pity that the comfort lacks a little, at this place … The firmness of the seat does not compensate for the suspension, while the central passenger remains the “punished” of the wagon: Unpadded backrest, close distance between the lower belt fasteners, the transmission tunnel annoying to the floor. For fans of carpooling, prefer the side seats!
Although classic and moulded in rigid materials, the dashboard remains pleasant on a daily basis: clear and well arranged controls, compact but numerous storages. And a close collaboration with smartphones: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility from the first level, induction charger from the second, two 12v jacks in console foot.
The generous endowment finally participates in the accreditation, in particular in finishing Edition 1 which embarks on the practical hands-free key, the 8-inch touchscreen instead of 7 (integrating GPS navigation and digital radio to Krell loudspeakers), and the comfortable Head-high display grouping the speed or indications of the GPS.
Engine Specs; Kona 1.0 T-GDi 120Hp
From its first Intuitive finish, the Kona 1.0 T-GDi 120 embarks on a generous series of equipment: 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android auto, air-conditioning ‘ automatic lights and windshield wipers, radar and rear camera, 17 ” rims, and active support to maintain In the way that only the expensive VW T-Roc also offers.
To compete, the French urban SUV must systematically check their high finish … not necessarily more expensive than the Intuitive Kona at 21 400 €: the Citroen C3 Aircross Puretech 110 Shine claims 21 250 € and offers the GPS and the sliding seat in addition, as The Renault captures TCe 120 intense which also adds the Handsfree key for 22 000 €. As often, the Peugeot 2008 evolves a little higher: 22 400 € for a version Puretech 110 Allure (GPS in addition).
The Kona does not stand out more in front of the foreign SUV, including its cousin Kia Stonic who enjoys an aggressive launch finish: at 21 490 €, the Stonic 1.0 T-GDi 120 launch Edition comes with GPS, DAB digital radio and leather/fabric upholstery.
At 21 700 €, the Opel Crossland X 1.2 Turbo 110 Innovation prefers the roof Biton and the camera back and at 22 050 €, the Seat Arona 1.0 TSI 115 Xcellence adds GPS, Biton roof, induction charger and hands-free key …
Prolong comparison with other urban SUV becomes almost discouraging: 21 400 € for the Nissan Juke 1.2 DIG-T 115 N-connecta, 21 950 € for the Renegade Jeep 1.6 110 ch South Beach Edition. An astonishing price proximity between these competitors that could make the conspiracy theorists believe in a real “cartel” on prices!
Objectively, the Hyundai Kona barely dominates the existing urban SUV: A Renault capture is more comfortable, a Citroen C3 Aircross more Modular, a Peugeot 2008 more dynamic, a Seat Arona better placed in price. The first criterion of choice of the Kona will therefore rest on its design but, unlike the Nissan Juke, there is not its only argument: pleasant to drive, quite welcoming, very well equipped and guaranteed five years, the Kona is far from betting on its physique!
